Tokyo – A Japanese user has claimed the 20 billionth tweet, as growth of the micro blogging platform continues. It came at 12:44 a.m. Sunday (1544 GMT, 11:44 a.m. EDT Saturday) from user “GGGGGGo_Lets_Go”
The users profile has exploded in popularity, so he has updated his bio:
“I’m grateful and humbled by those who are visiting because of my 20 billionth tweet. Be warned, I tweet a lot about baseball.”
Twitter usage has exploded in Japan, with 8 million tweets being sent a day. That’s second only to the US, and 8 percent of the total global tweets every day. 16 percent of internet users in Japan tweet, which is the highest percentage of any country. Twitter took 4 years to reach 10 billions tweets, but has grown so rapidly, that it only took another 5 months to double that total to reach 20 billions tweets.
Twitter Chief Executive Evan Williams visited Tokyo earlier this month :
“We’ve come a long way in two years especially in Japan,” he told an enthusiastic crowd of about 500.
One of the reasons why twitter is so popular in Japan is that so much can be said in 140 characters, with most Japanese words requiring much fewer characters than English words.
