Diego Maradona’s contract as the national coach of the Argentine football team will not be renewed. The decision to drop Maradona was unanimous, and an announcement was made Tuesday afternoon, after Maradona’s meeting with the Football Association president, Julio Grondona on Monday night.
Maradona’s team was knocked out of the Football World Cup at the quarterfinal stage by Germany in a crushing 4-0 defeat, and Maradona has been widely criticized as not being able to organize one of the most talented teams in the tournament to a higher achievement.
Maradona has been quite vocal about his desire to keep the job, but wasn’t willing to meet demands of changing his backroom team.
A statement on the AFA website read:
“The executive committee unanimously resolved not to renew the contract with Mr Diego Maradona as coach of the Argentina national football team.”
As a temporary measure Sergio Batista will take over the coaching position. Batista is currently the coach of the national youth team, and coached the national side to an Olympic gold in 2008. His first game will be against Ireland in Dublin on August 11.
