Canada – Scott Dixon has taken first place in the Honda Indy Edmonton in Edmonton, Canada, even though he crossed the finish line in second place. In a controversial move, Brazilian Helio Castroneves, from Team Penske, was charged with blocking his teammate, Will Power, and given a drive through penalty on lap 92. Castroneves failed to take the penalty and crossed the finish line in first place and was then dropped back to 10th place by officials.
Dixon was both surprised and elated when told the news, which gave him just his second win of the season. Fellow Target Chip Ganassi teammate, Dario Franchitti, finished third behind Will Power. Power was in two minds after the race, stating that he understood what Helio was trying to do, but also acknowledged that he thought the move was considered a block.
The incident occurred during a restart in the race in which Castroneves was leading. As Power made an attempt to pass on the outside, Helio shifted the car to the left, effectively stopping Power from advancing. Dixon used this opportunity to sneak up the inside of Power and move into second place. Castroneves was then deemed to have been blocking by officials and was ordered to take a drive through penalty.
Castroneves was furious of the decision and made his way straight to officials to make a complaint immediately after the race. Security and crew members were required in order to restrain him after he looked to manhandle officials.
The final result allowed Power to strengthen his lead in the Indy Car series with a commanding 50 point lead over Franchitti and 71 points ahead of Dixon in third place.
